The Goal: To motivate ourselves to read more outside of our comfort zones “for the love of reading.”

The Rules: There aren’t any! These prompts are intentionally very broad to make it as easy as possible for you to find books to read that you may not pick up otherwise.

Note: Over time, I’ll be sharing blog posts for each prompt with tips on finding the right book for you, and suggestions of books that may fit that prompt.

The Prompts:

  1. A book set in the state or province where you currently live

  2. A book set in the state or province where you're originally from

  3. A book you meant to read last year

  4. A book published in 2020

  5. A book published in 2021

  6. A book nominated for an award this year

  7. A book that won an award last year

  8. A format outside your comfort zone (i.e. print, ebook, audiobook)

  9. A book that fits your favorite prompt from another reading challenge

  10. A book outside your genre comfort zone

  11. The book you own that's been on your unread shelf the longest

    1. It can be print or electronic. The point is to read something you own to get through your to-be-read (tbr) list

  12. A book that's been on your tbr list the longest

    1. It does not have to be one you own

  13. A book that's highly recommended by a source you trust

  14. An audiobook by your favorite narrator.

    1. It can be read by the author, a celebrity, or an actor we typically see in movies or TV. Look for my blog post on this subject! For example, I absolutely loved hearing Patrick Stewart narrate The Last Battle, the 7th book of The Chronicles of Narnia.

  15. A book on the backlist of one of your favorite authors.

    1. Backlist means a book of theirs that you haven't read yet.

  16. A book featuring or specifically about one of your other hobbies besides reading such as cooking, hiking, gardening, sports, knitting, etc.

  17. An #OwnVoices book (what does this mean? See my blog post.)

  18. An autobiography, biography or memoir

  19. A book with a character or by an author with the same first, or last name as you

  20. A book voted for you by Bookstagram or other group of people

  21. A book mentioned in another book, movie, or TV show

  22. A book being made into a movie this year

    1. Check out #BookToFilm or #BookToBoxOffice for ideas

  23. A book being made into a TV series this year

    1. Use #BookToTV or #BookToTVSeries for ideas

  24. A book with a subject related to or on current events

    1. Either fiction based on current events or a non fiction book

  25. A reread of one of your favorite books

  26. A book by a new-to-you female author

  27. A book by a new-to-you BIPOC author

  28. A book by a new-to-you LGBTQ+ author

  29. A book in translation

  30. A book published the decade before you were born
